#1
AS PURCHASED May 2015
I bought this
sled in May of 2015 largely as a basket case. It had been
modified with triple pipes and a 141 x 1.1 track. They had left
the small 8 T drivers in it and I did not do the math on the
gear box, so no idea if it topped out at screaming for mercy at
70MPH or was geared and clutched to load the engine and pull to
100MPH. Although a 141 mountain max it certainly had the track
for 100MPH. The owner had it for awhile and had lost interest. A
clutch removal tool was required to proceed so that may of been
the stumbling block. I put it on the shelf and patiently waited
for a. In the fall of 2016
1999 VMAX 700
arrived and we were luckily able to salvage the engine.

As
purchased, she DID NOT come with half a dozen chickens.
|

The bottom end bulk of the engine was still secured in the chassis.
|

With
a spare engine included we ended up with extra cylinders
and pistons. |

The spare bottom end that came
in the deal has a bit of fire damage. A few
melted lines near the oil pump. |
|
#2, I STRIP DOWN THE CHASSIS FOR REBUILDING,

#3 REAR SUSPENSION SERVICE and TRACK CHANGE UP Summer 2017 |
A)
FRONT SUSPENSION ASSEMBLY Part I. |
B) NECESSARY
TRACK CHANGE |

Pressing the
small 8T (2.52 pitch)
drivers
off and a the
3.0 8T
drivers on. |

3.0 pitch driver
exposed just a fraction.

Front suspension strap. |
We installed
a Camoplast Cobra single ply 141 x 1.6 This track is STD equipment on many
2014 Cats and Yamahas with a dual purpose 141 sentiment
|
The track in the picture
on the left is the Yamaha parts track #8CC-47110-30 a
141 x 1.1" track more suited to the groomed trails than
the back country on our Blue Max 700

The track on the
right is the O.E.M. mountain 2" paddle track.
|
|
c) CHAIN
CASE ASSEMBLY
Part I Initial Assembly |

Finding evidence of
water in the chain case isn't a great feeling on tear
down! |

O.E.M. was 22/40 70L
8T(2.52) 86.10MPH
A straight swap to
the 3.0 ratio drivers would result in an unobtainable
102.5MPH
this would leave tons of bottom end power on the table never utilized
|

Hook the seal and remove it. |

The seal may not be perfect but grease or oil it is all the same.
|

Packed with grease. |

Seal reinstall.
|

Seal in place. |

Magnetic dipstick
and chain adjuster. |

Set up as bought. I
would think the chain is done. |

I assembled and ran it like this for our test drives and clutch tuning.
|
|
#4
WE SWAP THE H.O. STATOR OVER and INSTALL THE REDHEAD.
Like Smokey Yunick would say "Shake
her up in a bag" and lets see what we've got!! Some times
you end up with a Bag of "- - - t", you don't know until you put
her to work.....I know just the way to put her to work
alright...Fox N Hounds with the boys across
Saskatchewan!
|
a) WE
EXAMINE THE PISTONS AND CYLINDERS THRU THE EXHAUST PORTS
|
PISTONS LOOK EXCEPTIONAL

The engine is set in on the mounts to align the clutches.
|

The engine is in and oil lines and wireing is connected.
|
|
This engine was
salvaged from
A
'99 VMax 700
obtained for parts.
A few years
earlier I had bought a 1999 V Max 700 that was being parted
because aside "the engine", the "track" and 3 of the 4 "shocks",
there was not a single other straight or non-cross threaded part
on her!
C) WEIGHTED UP
TIME FOR FINAL TOUCHES and SKI ALIGNMENT Part I. |

With the weight of the engine in the chassis a final ski alignment is
possible. Note: the straight edge is in along the track and the steering
is centered and aligned off this reference point. It
should be noted that a 11TH hour opportunity to change
up to a Viper front end, did not change our alignment but
skewed our carefully centered position out. |

From carbs to coils she is pretty well complete. |

Oil pump. |
d) Electrical switch over...successful! |

The engine as purchased did not require complete disassembly !!
|

The stator on the
'99 V-MAX 700
needed to be removed... |

...And replaced with the newer style H.O. one. |

High output headlights on this model. |

#4
REVERSE INSTALLATION, ACCESSORIES and UPGRADED FRONT SUSPENSION
Summer 2017
Part of the
puzzle is upgrading the track for our Nisbet cross country
riding. A lot of opinions is out there but we want a maximum
traction in loose snow and yet something that can be driven on a
groomed trail from time to time....maybe never...but if it
happens! . Also the more snow moving and being carried by the
track the slower the sled will be. This is just plain physics,
we have found that a 121 x 15 x 1.5 is great on our 115HP 700's
and that a 121 x 15 x 1.25 is great on our 100HP 600's.
|
a)
Part II
Reverse Installation |
b)
A CHANCE PURCHASE SETS US UP WITH
A EARLY "VIPER" FRONT END |

The Blue Max is benefiting from a real surprise.
We bought a "2004 Venom" 600 triple for parts.
The Venom has donated a "PROACTION" Viper front end.
|

Had to change grease nipples to get any grease to
flow. Clearly grease was not applied in the lifetime
until now.
|
|
c)
PERFORMANCE FRONT END SET UP and ACCESSORIES |

I cranked a pile of preload into the front springs on the
KYB
shocks.
|

I also installed new "Dualy Carbides" for some extra bite in the corner.
|

These carbides are
also a lot thicker which is like cranking spring
pressure up another inch. |
|

Our
"Pipe Oven".
|

The "Pipe Oven" is located over the hottest section of exhaust pipe.
|

A rack on the tunnel extension. |

A bow saw and
hat
Hatchet
stowed down under. |

This the OEM trailing arms and spindles from the MM combined with the wide
radius rods, tie rods and sway bar.
|

This is the trailing arms, spindles and matching skis salvaged off the
"Venom"
that had the updated Viper front end introduced in 2002.
The 11TH hour acquisition of the Venom provided the
opportunity to install the Viper front end.
